Their Story

Born on July 12, 1751, in Cuvilly, France, Julie Billiart grew up in a rural village where her love for education began to blossom. However, her life took a dramatic turn when she became paralyzed at the age of 33, rendering her bedridden for 22 years. Despite her physical limitations, Julie's spirit remained unbroken. She devoted herself to prayer and became known for her exquisite embroidery, finding solace in creativity and faith. During this challenging time, she also began to educate the young girls in her community, bridging the gap between the impoverished and the noble classes.

The winds of the French Revolution forced Julie to flee her hometown, seeking refuge in Compiègne. Here, she faced even more adversity, suffering from an illness that robbed her of her ability to speak. Yet, in this moment of silence, she experienced a profound vision—one that would change the course of her life. Julie saw herself founding a new religious congregation dedicated to the education of young girls. In 1794, she met Françoise Blin de Bourdon, a noblewoman who shared her vision and became her steadfast partner in establishing the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1804. Julie's miraculous healing from paralysis and the restoration of her voice propelled her to create schools and homes for underprivileged girls in France and Belgium. Her dedication to education and faith inspired generations, and her legacy continues to thrive worldwide.
