Saint Claude de la Colombière

Born: 1641 Died: February 15, 1682

The Sacred Heart of Jesus is an inexhaustible fountain, whose sole desire is to pour itself out into humble and empty hearts.

Saint Claude de la Colombière was a French Jesuit priest and spiritual director who played a pivotal role in spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As the confessor to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, he helped validate and promote the mystical visions that would transform Catholic spirituality for centuries.

Life & Legacy

Claude was born in 1641 in Saint-Symphorien-d'Ozon, a small town near Lyon, France. From his youth, he showed exceptional intelligence and a deep attraction to the spiritual life. He entered the Society of Jesus as a young man, drawn by the Jesuits' unique combination of intellectual rigor, missionary zeal, and deep prayer.

After ordination, Claude quickly gained a reputation as a gifted preacher and spiritual director. In 1675, his life took its most significant turn when he became the confessor to a young Visitation nun named Margaret Mary Alacoque at the convent of Paray-le-Monial. Margaret Mary had been receiving extraordinary mystical visions of Jesus revealing His Sacred Heart — a heart burning with love for humanity. Most people dismissed her as delusional. Claude didn't. With careful theological discernment, he recognized the authenticity of her experiences and became the champion of Sacred Heart devotion.

In 1676, Claude was sent to England as chaplain to the Duchess of York, ministering to Catholics during one of the most dangerous periods of religious persecution. The anti-Catholic hysteria known as the 'Popish Plot' was at its height. Claude was arrested, imprisoned, and subjected to cruel treatment. Though eventually released and returned to France, his health was shattered.

He spent his final years continuing to write and minister despite constant illness, drawing strength from the very devotion he had championed — the infinite love of the Sacred Heart. He died on February 15, 1682, at just 41 years old. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1992.
