As a mandarin official, he navigated the complexities of governance while also nurturing his deep faith in Roman Catholicism. However, as Emperor Tự Đức intensified the persecution of Christians, Michael faced an impossible choice: to renounce his faith or to suffer the consequences.
In May 1857, Michael was arrested and subjected to harsh interrogations, yet he remained steadfast, refusing to abandon his beliefs. His determination and courage in the face of persecution culminated in his martyrdom on May 22, 1857. Michael’s death was not in vain; he became a symbol of hope and resilience for Vietnamese Catholics. Canonized in 1988, he is remembered alongside 116 other martyrs who displayed extraordinary bravery and faith during dark times.
