Their Story
Born on March 12, 1831, in Bouxières-aux-Chênes, France, Joseph Gérard felt a profound calling to serve God from an early age. After joining the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, he was sent to the missions in South Africa, where he encountered the rich culture of the Basotho people. Arriving in Lesotho, he faced numerous challenges, including language barriers and a lack of resources, yet he remained resolute in his mission to spread the Gospel. Joseph built schools, churches, and community centers, fostering education and faith among his new neighbors.
Throughout his 50 years of service, Joseph Gérard's compassion and dedication nurtured a burgeoning Catholic community in Lesotho. His tireless efforts led to a significant growth in the number of converts, as he embraced the Basotho culture while sharing his faith. Even in the twilight of his life, Joseph worked diligently, ministering to the people he loved until just a month before his passing on May 29, 1914. His beatification in 1988 marked a significant recognition of his contributions to the Church and the lasting impact he had on the lives of many.
