Born in the serene town of Irinoupolis, John of Constantinople felt a divine calling early in life. He dedicated himself to the monastic life, eventually becoming the abbot of the Cathares Monastery in bustling Constantinople. His journey took a fateful turn when the Byzantine Emperor Leo the Armenian initiated a campaign against the sacred icons, deeming them heretical. John, a staunch defender of the faith and the veneration of icons, rose to challenge this oppressive regime.
Facing brutal torture for his beliefs, John's spirit remained unbroken. He was subjected to harsh conditions, yet he clung to his faith and his love for the sacred images that connected the faithful to the divine. His unwavering commitment to iconodulism, the love and honor of icons, became a beacon of hope for many during this dark time. Ultimately, John’s struggles led him to martyrdom in Aphousia, where he died in 839, leaving behind a legacy of courage and conviction.
