Their Story

Born around October 19, 1469, in Beverley, Yorkshire, John Fisher exhibited a profound intellect and deep devotion from an early age. He pursued his studies at the University of Cambridge, where he later became chancellor, inspiring countless students with his wisdom and leadership. In 1504, he was appointed Bishop of Rochester, where he dedicated himself to pastoral care and the moral education of his flock. His scholarly pursuits and commitment to the Catholic faith laid the groundwork for a life marked by integrity and conviction.

As the winds of change swept through England during the Reformation, Fisher found himself at a crossroads. The rise of King Henry VIII’s authority threatened the very foundation of the Catholic Church. When the king declared himself the Supreme Head of the Church of England, Fisher stood resolute, refusing to abandon the doctrine of papal supremacy. His courageous stance led to imprisonment in the Tower of London, where he faced immense pressure to renounce his beliefs. Yet, Fisher’s faith remained unshakeable. On June 22, 1535, he was executed, a martyr for truth and a defender of the faith. Shortly before his death, he was named a cardinal, a testament to his unwavering commitment to the Church he served.
