Born on April 30, 1623, in Montigny-sur-Avre, France, François de Laval was destined for a life of privilege as a member of the Montmorency family. However, he chose to renounce his claim to inheritance to pursue a calling in the Church. His journey began in earnest when he arrived in New France in 1659, where he confronted the challenges of a fledgling colony.
