#TheHealer #TheServant
Born: 3 January 1840, Tremelo, Brabant, Kingdom of Belgium Died: 15 April 1889, Kalaupapa, Molokaʻi, Kingdom of Hawaii

Father Damien, a Belgian priest, dedicated his life to the lepers of Molokaʻi, Hawaii, transforming despair into hope through love and service. His selfless commitment and ultimate sacrifice inspire us to care for the marginalized today.

The greatest disease is not leprosy; it is the feeling of being unloved.

Their Story

Born on January 3, 1840, in Tremelo, Belgium, Damien De Veuster felt a calling to serve from a young age. After joining the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts, he was sent to Hawaii in 1864. Initially, he taught the Catholic faith and worked tirelessly to support local communities. However, it was in 1873 that his life took a profound turn when he volunteered to serve at the leper colony in Molokaʻi, a place abandoned by society and plagued by fear and stigma.

For 16 years, Father Damien became a beacon of compassion. He didn’t just preach; he lived among the lepers, tending to their wounds, building homes, and providing education. He shared their struggles, eating their food and embracing their pain. Through his unwavering devotion, he established a sense of community and dignity among the outcasts. Tragically, after 11 years of this selfless service, Damien himself contracted leprosy. Yet, he continued his mission of love until his death on April 15, 1889, embodying the true spirit of sacrifice and charity.
