It is believed he traveled with a group of devoted companions to Sithiu, now known as Saint-Omer in northern France. There, he found a home in the monastery, under the guidance of Saint Bertin, a revered abbot and disciple of the influential Saint Columbanus. These formative years shaped Erkembode’s deep commitment to spiritual life and community service.
As time passed, Erkembode's dedication and wisdom led the clergy and people to elect him as the bishop of Thérouanne. Despite the significant responsibilities of his new role, he continued to serve as the abbot of his abbey, seamlessly blending his spiritual leadership with practical care for his community. His bishopric spanned 26 years, during which he nurtured his diocese, which extended into the heart of the mainland.
