Francesco Pontillo was born on November 16, 1729, in Taranto, Italy. From a young age, he faced hardship when his father passed away, leaving him to support his widowed mother and younger siblings. This burden forced Francesco to work as a rope maker, a job that barely sustained them. Despite his humble beginnings and lack of formal education, he felt a profound calling to serve God and those in need. In 1754, he joined the Order of Friars Minor, taking the name Egidio Maria of Saint Joseph.
His life as a Franciscan brother was marked by unwavering dedication to the poorest of the poor. He served as a porter and cook in various convents, but his heart lay with the sick and the outcast. Egidio traveled through Naples, offering comfort to lepers and the marginalized, earning the title 'Consoler of Naples.' His compassion and humility touched countless lives, transforming his community's perception of those deemed unworthy. After a long life of service, Egidio passed away on February 7, 1812, leaving behind a legacy of love and care for the downtrodden.
