Their Story
Born into a family of saints in Soissons, Desideratus was raised by his parents, Auginus and Agia, who instilled a deep sense of compassion and duty in their children. Growing up, he witnessed the struggles of the poor and was inspired to dedicate his life to their service. His early commitment to charity led him to a prominent role as chancellor under King Clotaire, where he fought against simony and heresy—a battle that defined much of his life. Yet, despite his public responsibilities, Desideratus yearned for a quieter life in the monastery, seeking solace and spiritual growth away from the world's distractions.
However, his leadership qualities could not be ignored. In 549, he became the Bishop of Bourges, succeeding Arcadius. As bishop, Desideratus embraced his role as mediator, working tirelessly to resolve conflicts in his region. His efforts bore fruit when he successfully reconciled the long-standing disputes between Anjou and Poitou. Known for his wisdom, he stood firm against Nestorianism at the Fifth Council of Orleans and the Second Council of Auvergne, protecting the integrity of the faith. St. Desideratus passed away on May 8, 550, leaving behind a legacy of peace, justice, and unwavering service to others.
