Their Story
Born in Jerusalem, Crispoldus was among the Seventy Disciples chosen to spread the teachings of Jesus. In 58 AD, he was sent to Italy by Saint Peter himself, embarking on a journey filled with purpose and determination. Upon arriving in Umbria, Crispoldus quickly established himself as a beacon of hope, performing miracles and preaching the message of Christianity in the town of Bettona. His dedication and compassion earned him the love of his community, and he was soon consecrated as the first bishop of Bettona by Saint Brictius.
However, the winds of change were harsh. Under the rule of Roman Emperor Maximian, Christians faced severe persecution. Crispoldus was arrested for his beliefs and brought before the prefect Asterius. When commanded to sacrifice to the Roman gods, he resolutely refused, affirming his faith despite the threats of torture and death. His bravery resonated with those around him, and he was ultimately executed, alongside fellow Christian Barontius. In a tragic yet noble act, Crispoldus’ sister, Tutela, and twelve other women sought to honor his memory by burying him, only to face their own martyrdom for their unwavering faith.
