The Bishop Who Became a Martyr

#ThePeacemaker #TheServant #TheTraveler
Died: ~597, AD Amiternum

Saint Cetteus, a 6th-century bishop, stood firm against oppression, choosing faith over fear. His remarkable journey from exile to martyrdom inspires us to confront our own struggles with courage and compassion.

Their Story

Saint Cetteus, also known as Peregrinus, was a devoted bishop elected to lead the see of Amiternum in 590 AD during the pontificate of Gregory the Great. His commitment to his flock was tested when Amiternum fell under the control of two Lombard captains, Alai and Umbolus. Refusing to compromise his principles, Cetteus fled to Rome, seeking refuge and guidance. Pope Gregory, recognizing the bishop's integrity, encouraged him to return, assuring him that the Lombards would treat the citizens humanely.

Despite the pope's assurances, conflict erupted between the two captains, leading to a night-time occupation of Amiternum by Alai’s ally, Count Verilianus. The townspeople, enraged by the betrayal, sought to kill Alai. In a moment of bravery, Cetteus intervened, advocating for mercy and preventing bloodshed. However, his act of compassion led to a grave misunderstanding; Umbolus, mistaking Cetteus for an ally of Alai, ordered his execution. Bound by a heavy stone, Cetteus was cast into the Aterno-Pescara River, where he would meet his tragic end. His body, eventually discovered by fishermen, was buried in Pescara, where he became known as Peregrinus, the 'traveler.'
