Anthelm of Belley was a dedicated Carthusian monk and bishop whose unwavering commitment to reforming the church and caring for the marginalized inspires us to act with compassion and courage today.

Their Story

Born in 1107 near Chambéry, France, Anthelm of Belley began his journey as a man of faith early in life. Initially receiving an ecclesiastical benefice, he felt a profound calling that led him to resign at the age of thirty and join the Carthusian order at Portes. His decision marked the beginning of a transformative path. Just two years later, he was appointed prior of the Grande Chartreuse, the motherhouse of the Carthusian order, which was in disrepair at the time. With exceptional administrative skills, Anthelm revitalized the community, improving the living conditions of the monks and standardizing the rules of the order, even allowing women to join in their own houses.

Anthelm's dedication to his faith and community extended beyond his role as prior. After a brief period as a hermit, he returned to the Grande Chartreuse in 1152 to defend Pope Alexander III against the antipope Victor IV. His courage continued to shine when he became bishop of Belley in 1163, where he worked tirelessly to reform the clergy and address injustices, such as excommunicating Count Humbert of Maurienne for heinous acts against priests. Even when faced with opposition, Anthelm stood firm, ultimately withdrawing from his diocese in protest of the papal reversal of Humbert's excommunication. Though unable to travel to reconcile the conflict between Henry II of England and Thomas Becket, he devoted his later years to caring for the poor and lepers until his death in 1178, where he exhibited forgiveness even to those who wronged him.
